HCP has been designated as a 501(c)(4) social welfare nonprofit organization by the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
HCP History
HCP emerged in the summer of 2004 as an idea to create a working group of several local and regional organizations and Hispanic leaders to fill the need for a positive nonpartisan, grass roots driven and solution-oriented national Hispanic organization.
The goal was simple – help Hispanic Americans learn more about US culture and public policy so they can more equally and easily seek the benefits of US society, economically, politically, culturally and socially while understanding the shared responsibilities we have as a nation. A fully open forum for all Hispanics was needed, and HCP was thus created as a national grass root nonpartisan nonprofit advocacy organizaton open to all Hispanics.
In May, 2006, HCP filed for incorporation in the Commonwealth of Virginia and in January 2007, HCP was granted not-for-profit 501(c)(4) status by the Internal Revenue Service. In August, 2007, HCP opened its first office in Alexandria, VA, minutes from the White House and Capitol Hill in the Washington, DC Metro region.
HCP's first initiatives included spearheading the formation of a Latin America Caucus, The Presidential Candidate Policies toward Latin America project and the National Hispanic Debate project.
Other mission-oriented projects followed such as Pueblo Hispano - HCP’s monthly newsletter, Policy Papers, Intercambio, Student Outreach, HCP's Facebook, and Ideas del Pueblo – an Op-Ed forum for Hispanic Americans, which were conceived by HCP Staff in conversations with Hispanics across the US.
Today, HCP has nearly 20 talented, dedicated and diverse volunteer Staff members located throughout the US who continue to reach out to communities everywhere to build a forum for Hispanic Americans to learn about, participate and lead in US public policy.
